THE JURASSIC COAST WORLD HERITAGE SITE FROM START TO FINISH “Every rock has a history - Every fossil tells a story”
The coastline of East Devon & Dorset was recognised by UNESCO as being unique in the world in terms of offering an almost complete coastal cross-section through the Mesozoic Era (Middle Life) between 252 to 66 million years ago. It then was inaugurated as the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site in 2001. Although called Jurassic, it is in fact made up of three quite distinct periods of time, those being in age order, the Triassic, the Jurassic & the Cretaceous. The whole era was bookended by massive extinctions of life both on land and in water. We as a species have much to learn and heed from these events.
Very different rocks comprise its geology and the fossils found within, give accounts of dramatic episodes in terms of environmental & evolutionary change, ultimately leading to the both the rise & fall of the dinosaurs and then dramatically giving the opportunity for mammals to rise dominance on our planet. However, that was all to be in the future and is totally separate and fascinating story.
We are delighted to welcome Chris Woodward, a former teacher of Geology, Geography, Business and Land-based Studies. From 2015 to 2024 he was a Jurassic Coast Ambassador with particular interest in outreach education for schools, colleges, museums and other interest groups. He also currently undertakes the commentaries for geological boat cruises along both the Jurassic Coast WHS and the UNESCO English Riviera’s Global Geopark. Chris will be giving a facinating presentation and talk.
