When: Thursday 19 October 2023
The Dartmoor Whisky Distillery, The Old Town Hall, Bovey Tracey. TQ13 9EG
We are delighted to present an exclusive opportunity to join Joe Tizzard and Nigel Hawke for an evening at The Dartmoor Whisky Distillery. Don't miss this exciting opportunity to meet and hear from Nigel and Joe as they present their careers in horse racing.
Doors open at 19.00 and the presentation will begin at 19.30.
Nigel Hawke
Cornish-born trainer Nigel Hawke is a former jockey whose riding career was cut short by a head injury in a fall at Newton Abbot. In 1991, Nigel won the Grand National on Seagram for Devon trainer David Barons, following on from their Cheltenham Festival win in the Ritz Club Chase. Nigel rode for two more full seasons until his injury put a halt to his riding career.
Nigel was always going to become a trainer and the acquisition of Thorne Farm, just outside Tiverton, has seen his facilities expand and develop into a well-equipped yard of 60-70 horses in training. As a trainer, Nigel had a further connection to Aintree having bought, raced and sold subsequent dual Grand National winner Tiger Roll.
Joe Tizzard
Joe Tizzard rode for 18 seasons as a jump jockey, largely for multiple champion trainer Paul Nicholls and for his father Colin, who trained several Grade 1 winners including Gold Cup winner Native River. Perhaps Joe’s greatest days in the saddle were winning the Ryanair Chase and Champion Bumper on Cue Card, another star chaser trained by Colin.
Having retired from riding in 2014, Joe has played a key role in the family-run training operation before taking over the license himself last season. There are around 100 horses in training at the Tizzard’s base in Milborne Port on the Somerset-Dorset border, where the search for the next Native River, Cue Card or Thistlecrack continues.
The evening will begin with a short presentation about the distillery and the bar will be open serving drinks.
